Sherrifs Meadow

The problem
Natural habitats and open spaces face increasing threats from development, environmental degradation, and climate change. Conservation organizations often struggle to engage local communities, secure funding, and effectively communicate the importance of protecting ecologically significant land for future generations.
What we built
Sheriff's Meadow Foundation is a nonprofit land trust dedicated to conserving and protecting the natural landscapes, wildlife habitats, and open spaces of Martha's Vineyard. Through land acquisition, conservation easements, stewardship, and community engagement, the foundation preserves ecologically important areas while ensuring public access to nature and promoting environmental sustainability. Land conservation and protection — Permanently protects thousands of acres of forests, wetlands, grasslands, coastal habitats, and open spaces through land ownership and conservation restrictions, preserving the island's natural heritage. Long-term environmental stewardship — Actively manages protected preserves by restoring ecosystems, maintaining trails, controlling invasive species, and safeguarding wildlife habitats to ensure the health of conserved lands for future generations. Community access to nature — Provides residents and visitors with opportunities to enjoy protected landscapes through hiking trails, educational programs, and outdoor recreation while promoting responsible use of natural resources. Conservation partnerships and advocacy — Collaborates with landowners, government agencies, donors, and local communities to expand conservation efforts, protect critical habitats, and strengthen environmental awareness across Martha's Vineyard. Preserving natural heritage for future generations — Rather than simply protecting individual properties, Sheriff's Meadow Foundation creates a connected network of conserved lands that supports biodiversity, strengthens climate resilience, and ensures Martha's Vineyard's unique landscapes remain protected for generations to come.
